In the Know: Palmitate’s influence on trophoblast viability

A new article from USDOHaD Member and Faculty Representative, Satish Kumar Natarajan PhD, was just published in Cell Death & Disease. In their article, “Palmitate induces integrated stress response and lipoapoptosis in trophoblasts,” the researchers conducted an exploration of the effects of palmitate, a prevalent saturated free fatty acid, on placental trophoblast cell viability. Their findings reveal a concentration-dependent increase in trophoblast lipoapoptosis and the underlying mechanisms related to the MAPK pathway, highlighting the significant impact of maternal obesity on fetal development.
