A new review has been published on the impact of placenta function on craniofacial and brain development. This comprehensive review discusses how both placental hormones, like growth factor, prolactin, and insulin-like growth factor 1, and delivery of nutrients like sulfate, Vitamin D, and calcium influence the development of both the fetal head, expanding consideration to the skull and face in addition to brain tissue.
They identify that there are hormones and nutrients that affect both craniofacial development and neurodevelopment and emphasize the importance of investigating placenta- and sex-specific mechanisms to better understand more common craniofacial anomalies in addition to well studied neurodevelopmental disorders.
